Challenge: Create an event in Melbourne where people passionate about sustainability can come together to discuss ideas and gain inspiration, ideas, and support in this sometimes overwhelming industry. Create a brand identity that is not corporate, yet professional to appeal to corporates. Find a sustainable venue in which to hold the regular gathering. Extend invitation of the event to networks and the Melbourne public

Solution: The first event was held in Melbourne Aug 07. Direct invitee lists have grown from 40 to over 1700 with other events and organisations promoting the events through their own internal networks, newsletters, intranets and discussion boards. Once speakers were found for each event, popularity increased further. Using web based invitations allows for viral marketing. This also reduces the impact of having any paper based materials. A survey conducted in September 2008 investigated whether Melbourne Sustainability Drinks was really bringing people together and from that creating positive change. 100 people were polled and the feedback was unmistakable. 57% of respondents indicated that Sustainability Drinks in Melbourne had been the vehicle for outcomes, advancement or some action toward a more sustainable future; partnerships and alliances, new jobs, funding for sustainability projects and relationships.
